Led by the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), the European Week Against Cancer (25-31 May) highlights the importance of prevention, early detection, equitable access to treatment, and support for cancer patients. Despite advances in cancer therapy, disparities in screening, diagnosis, and treatment persist across EU member states.
Below are key EU-funded projects that are tackling these challenges and advancing high-quality care for all:
i-Violin Project
This project introduced tools like the automatic CT image quality calculator, standardizing oncological imaging for chest, pelvis, and abdomen CT scans. i-Violin’s work has optimized imaging practices and emphasized collaboration among radiologists, radiographers, and medical physicists. A webinar series exploring its tools is now available online.
Joint Action (JA) CraNE
CraNE has laid the foundation for the European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs), reducing inequalities in cancer care. By creating a Maturity Model and quality improvement pathways, CraNE supports future CCCs and Comprehensive Cancer Care Networks (CCCNs). The ongoing JA EUnetCCC is building on this progress.
JANE and JANE-2
The Joint Action JANE defined the scope for seven European Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in oncology, focusing on complex cancers, palliative care, survivorship, and more. JANE-2 is operationalizing these networks, fostering expert collaboration across Europe.
BEACON Project
BEACON mapped EU cancer centres’ capacities, consolidating data for patients, healthcare providers, and researchers. Its platform offers targeted insights to improve care delivery.
CAN.HEAL
This initiative integrated genomics into public health, advancing technologies like next-generation sequencing and molecular tumour profiling. CAN.HEAL developed tools like EU-wide Oncology Decision Support Tools (EU-oncDST) and liquid biopsy frameworks, promoting equitable cancer care.
ProCAncer-I Project
Focusing on prostate cancer, ProCAncer-I uses AI to enhance diagnosis and treatment. Its platform has amassed MRI data from over 11,000 patients, ensuring AI tools meet fairness and accuracy standards.

EUCanScreen supports these efforts by disseminating knowledge and fostering collaboration to improve cancer prevention and screening across Europe. Together, we can pave the way for equitable and effective cancer care for all.
The general objective of EUCanScreen is to assure sustainable implementation of high-quality screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, as well as implementation of the recently recommended screening programs – for lung, prostate and gastric cancers. EUCanScreen will facilitate the reduction of cancer burden and achieving equity across the EU.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s EU4HEALTH Programme under the Grant Agreement no 101162959
