Plant based diets linked to reduced breast cancer risk

Study

On 17 July 2025, IARC published European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study results showing that higher adherence to healthful plant‑based diets (rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, vegetable oils, coffee/tea) was associated with an 11% lower risk of post‑menopausal breast cancer.

Results

Around 30–50% of this benefit was mediated by reductions in BMI and waist circumference. These findings support the role of nutrition in cancer prevention and encourage wider public health and policy initiatives across the EU. The results were published in the European Journal of Epidemiology. 👉Read more
