The 1st European Summit on Cancer Prevention and Control, held on 27 May 2025 at the National Institute of Oncology in Warsaw, marked a pivotal moment in Europe’s fight against cancer. Organized under the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU, the event brought together health ministers, WHO representatives, OECD experts, and leading researchers to strengthen collaborative efforts in primary and secondary prevention.
Key highlights included:
– The launch of Poland’s Oncology Portal, a digital tool to enhance personalized prevention and patient access to knowledge.
– Discussions on improving screening participation, particularly for breast cancer, despite existing program availability.
The summit also showcased policy solutions for rapid implementation, focusing on equitable screening access, vaccinations, and lifestyle interventions. Prof. Paweł Koczkodaj stressed that the event was “just the beginning” of long-term EU collaboration, with the next summit planned for 2026.
With strong support from the Presidency Trio (Poland, Denmark, Cyprus), this summit laid the groundwork for a unified, evidence-based European cancer prevention strategy, to optimize early detection and public health impact.
