The intensive summer school “Best Practices in Childhood Obesity” was successfully completed, organized by the 6th Health ADM in collaboration with the University of Patras, with lecturers and participants from various European countries, designed for pediatricians, clinical nutritionists, dietitians, public health professionals and other healthcare providers working with children. The structure of the summer school included both theoretical background and best practices in teamwork and lectures by distinguished scientists working in the European Health4EUkids project.

The aim was to equip participants with evidence-based knowledge, practical skills and interdisciplinary tools to effectively address the complex issue of childhood obesity, offering the opportunity to highlight the interdisciplinary approach used in childhood obesity to optimize health outcomes. At the same time, students had the opportunity to be trained in the latest developments and applications for childhood obesity at the community level.

A total of 26 students from Croatia, Finland, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland,  at the end of this summer school, were able to:

– Understand the epidemiology, risk factors and long-term consequences of childhood obesity.

– Become proficient in screening and diagnostic criteria, including the interpretation of BMI, growth charts and metabolic markers.

– Learn how to assess dietary intake, physical activity, and mental health in children and adolescents.

– Explore strategies for family-centered care, motivational interviewing, and behavior change communication.

– Examine best practices in promoting nutrition and physical activity.

– Understand the psychosocial dimensions of obesity, including stigma, self-esteem, and mental health.

– Examine public health initiatives, school programs, and policy approaches.

– Develop interprofessional strategies for managing complex childhood obesity cases.

In the context of the European Health4EUKids project and the implementation of the Work Package 5 (W.P. 5) “GRUNAU MOVES” the sixth action “Monthly poster campaign” took place with the students and teachers of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grade of the 13th Primary School of Patras and the 26th Primary School of Patras. The students had the opportunity to express theirselves by drawing what they learned from all the activities they participated within the European Health4EUKids project as well as to play by finding the hidden word on the poster.

Finally, the project’s team voted for the best drawings.

In the context of the European project Health4EUKids and the implementation of Work Package 5 (W.P. 5) “GRUNAU MOVES” took place the action “Movement Map” with the students and teachers of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6^th Grade of the 13th Primary School of Patras and the 26th Primary School of Patras. The students were informed by the pediatrician Dr. Alexandra Aggelakopoulou from the Pediatric Clinic of the Universital General Hospital of Patras and the health visitor Lamprini Lachanioti of 6^th Health ADM for walking, playing and sports areas as well as the health structures that exist in their area.

Children, by scanning the map with their mobile phones, will be able to find information about nearby hospitals, health centers, entertainment areas (playgrounds), swimming pools, sports areas, etc., an important and useful application edited by the IT Department of 6th Health ADM.

In the context of the European project Health4EUKids and the implementation of Work Package 5 (W.P. 5) “GRUNAU MOVES” the action “Drawing at school” took place on 20/5/2025 and 22/5/2025 with the students and teachers of 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grade of the 13th Primary School of Patras (20/5/2025) and of the 26th Primary School of Patras (22/5/2025) with the aim of strengthening children’s mental health awareness and physical exercise.

The students painted under the guidance of the painter Mr. Constantinos Artavanis and Ms. Vasiliki Artavanis from the “Morfes Texnis” Workshop and played with all their heart their favorite games in the courtyard of their school.

The presence and contribution of the volunteers and staff of the 6th Health ADM involved in the project was valuable in the implementation of the action.

On May 20, the Public Health Bureau of Kaunas City Municipality brought together specialists, parents, and public health partners for the scientific-practical conference “Smart Family – 2025.” The event focused on the most pressing topics concerning children’s health: poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, excessive screen time, and the increasingly alarming state of children’s mental and emotional well-being.

This conference is an important part of the “Health4EUkids” project – a Europe-wide initiative funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. The goal of the project is to share successful health promotion practices among European countries and to contribute to the improvement of public health at the community level.

In 2024, the city of Kaunas chose to implement the Finnish best practice program “Smart Family,” which is based on activities that promote healthy lifestyles for the whole family. More than 20 families with children from Kaunas have already participated in the program. They not only deepened their knowledge about healthy nutrition and physical activity but also had hands-on experience preparing health-friendly meals and spending active, quality time together.

This initiative represents a significant step toward long-term societal change: healthier habits, stronger family bonds, and happier children.

A day of joy and fun for young and adults, the action on Sunday 4.5.2025 at the South Park of Patras within the framework of the European project Health4EUkids.

The program included:

Giannelou, Midwife, Agios Andreas General Hospital, “Information on breastfeeding”, K. Savrami, Associate Professor, Department of Theatre Studies, University of Patras “Movement: Creation – Well-being – Communication”, E. Gintoni, Clinical Psychologist, Universital General Hospital of Patras “Technology and childhood obesity” followed by an open discussion.
• – Pillar B. Movement-Game with dance from the Dansarte dance school and games from TEFAA graduates S. Moraiti, N. Pagoni, D. Sklavou.
• – Pillar C. Nutrition point with instructions for healthy eating and snacks by Nutritionists V. Koutsokosta, E. Stathakaro, A. Panagiota of the Universital General Hospital of Patras and Cooking in a healthy and practical way by the Universital General Hospital of Patras cooks, S. Papachristou and A. Sarambela as well as Information on breastfeeding, by S. Giannelou.
• – Pillar D. Meal with street food suggestions.

The event closed with a song about healthy eating prepared by the students of the 32nd Primary School of Patras who are participating in the program.
