The “Health4EUkids” joint action of the EU4Health European project co-funded by European Union and HaDEA is included in the field of health promotion and prevention of non-communicable diseases, indicating best practices and specific risk factors from research results on childhood obesity that have already been developed from previous research actions, namely Grünau Moves (Germany) and Smart Family (Finland).

At the 3rd WP4 & WP5 & WP6 in person meeting of the European project “Health4EUkids” that took place on 28^th and 29^th August 2025 in Patras (Greece), George Karydas (6th Health ADM, Greece), Chiara Cattaneo and Angela Giusti (ISS, Italy) welcomed the collaborated partners (Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain).

The WP4 Annual Meeting, coordinated by WP Leaders Chiara Cattaneo and Angela Giusti from ISS, Italy, in collaboration with WP5 and WP6, pursued two main objectives. The first objective was to take stock, at the conclusion of the project, of the sustainability of the individual and community health promotion approach developed within the Joint Action, aimed at preventing childhood obesity and strengthening parental and community competences. The meeting also provided an opportunity to share the main lessons learned over the past three years, which can support the consolidation of results and foster the scaling up and sustainability of good practices and of the salutogenic vision. In line with the overall participatory approach of the Joint Action, a World Café was organised, enabling a co-construction of future directions.

The second objective was to identify the key messages to be reported to the European Commission, in a perspective of refeeding the system, together with the necessary requests to ensure the sustainability of actions. A further participatory methodology, based on listening and collective reflection, was used to this end.

The results of the work coordinated by WP4 will be disseminated through the project’s channels and shared with relevant stakeholders. Among the key recommendations, WP4 calls on the European Commission to continue and support the implementation of best practices developed in this and other Joint Actions, through a follow-up system that guarantees continuity and continuous improvement, building on the shared experience of the many countries involved.

The second day of the meeting continued in parallel sessions with the Presentation of the WP5 session. Objectives to achieve by Marta Garcia and Rosana Peiro Pérez (FISABIO/DGSP-CV, Spain), where presented the Evaluation. How we are. The main topics to evaluate and Discussion with pilots, followed by a wrap up. Next, presented the SWOT Analysis. What we know what we would like to achieve, followed by Working groups about SWOT analysis and a wrap up. On WP6: Smart Family session leaded by Heli Kuusipalo, Päivi Mäki, Nella Savolainen, Emma Koivurinta, Kati Kuisma, Taina Sainio (THL, Finland) presented the Objectives to achieve: Evaluation to ensure sustainability of the smart modules adopted by MS´s (Task 6.3) followed by Member states presenting sustainability and transferability regarding the Policy dialogue leading to the future steps of Smart family implementation. Also, a discussion about the tasks to be done for the final report which is due to end of November 2025 took place, followed by a discussion for the scientific article.

Finally, the Final remarks-Next steps presented by Apostolos Vantarakis (UPAT, Greece) and the Steering Committee took place where decisions about important issues regarding the project were discussed.

The “HEALTH4EUkids” Joint Action aims to implement health promotion and prevention strategies for child obesity across European countries. It seeks to share best practices and research findings, particularly focusing on the initiatives Grunau Moves from Germany and Smart Family from Finland. The project involves knowledge transfer, cooperation between member states, policy development, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles in families and communities. Its goal is to prevent childhood obesity, increase physical activity and healthy diet, and ensure the sustainability and transferability of successful practices to other member states.

Completion of the International Summer School “Best Practices in Childhood Obesity”

Completion of the International Summer School “Best Practices in Childhood Obesity” by the 6th Health ADM in collaboration with the University of Patras

The intensive summer school “Best Practices in Childhood Obesity” was successfully completed, organized by the 6th Health ADM in collaboration with the University of Patras, with lecturers and participants from various European countries, designed for pediatricians, clinical nutritionists, dietitians, public health professionals and other healthcare providers working with children. The structure of the summer school included both theoretical background and best practices in teamwork and lectures by distinguished scientists working in the European Health4EUkids project.

The aim was to equip participants with evidence-based knowledge, practical skills and interdisciplinary tools to effectively address the complex issue of childhood obesity, offering the opportunity to highlight the interdisciplinary approach used in childhood obesity to optimize health outcomes. At the same time, students had the opportunity to be trained in the latest developments and applications for childhood obesity at the community level.

A total of 26 students from Croatia, Finland, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, at the end of this summer school, were able to:

– Understand the epidemiology, risk factors and long-term consequences of childhood obesity.

– Become proficient in screening and diagnostic criteria, including the interpretation of BMI, growth charts and metabolic markers.

– Learn how to assess dietary intake, physical activity, and mental health in children and adolescents.

– Explore strategies for family-centered care, motivational interviewing, and behavior change communication.

– Examine best practices in promoting nutrition and physical activity.

– Understand the psychosocial dimensions of obesity, including stigma, self-esteem, and mental health.

– Examine public health initiatives, school programs, and policy approaches.

– Develop interprofessional strategies for managing complex childhood obesity cases.

Medical School Summer Course – Best Practices in Child Obesity

The prevalence of child obesity is increasing in our times, posing a burden for modern societies and their health systems. Health personnel will be called to cope with the increasing number of children with obesity. This intensive summer school “Best Practices in child obesity” is designed for pediatricians, clinical nutritionists, dietitians, public health professionals, and other healthcare providers working with children. It aims to equip participants with evidence-based knowledge, practical skills, and interdisciplinary tools to effectively address the complex issue of childhood obesity. This offers an opportunity to showcase the interdisciplinary approach employed in child obesity to optimize health outcomes. At the same time, students will be educated on the most recent developments and applications for child obesity at community level. The structure of the program entails both theoretical background and best practices in teamwork and lectures by distinguished scientists working in a Health4EUkids Joint Action. A total of 30 students will be practicing in the University of Patras, Medical School.

Target group

Course aim

The trainees are expected to acquire knowledge, based on an interdisciplinary approach on the management of child obesity in the community using best practices implemented in Health4EUKids European Joint Action.

At the end of this summer school, students should be able to:

– Understand the epidemiology, risk factors, and long-term consequences of childhood obesity.
– Gain proficiency in screening and diagnostic criteria, including BMI interpretation, growth charts, and metabolic markers.
– Learn how to assess dietary intake, physical activity, and behavioral health in children and adolescents.
– Explore strategies for family-centered care, motivational interviewing, and behavior change communication.
– Review best practices in diet and physical activity promotion.
– Understand the psychosocial dimensions of obesity, including stigma, self-esteem, and mental health.
– Examine public health initiatives, school-based programs, and policy approaches.
– Develop interprofessional strategies for managing complex cases of pediatric obesity.

Fee

No fees. Students should arrange their travel, accommodation and lunches.

Nutrition Day by the 6th Health ADM in collaboration with the University of Patras at the 29th and 32nd Primary Schools of Patras within the framework of the European project Health4EUkids

Within the framework of the European project Health4EUKids and the implementation of Work Package 5 (W.P. 5) “GRUNAU MOVES”, students of 4^th, 5^th 6^th grades of the 29th Primary School of Patras and the 32nd Primary School of Patras were informed about the importance of nutrition in their lives.

Students played a relay race / question game “truth or myth” about beverages, breakfast, honey, snacks, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, as well as questions for older children about hidden sources of sugar and salt.

The action was created and coordinated by:

– Dr. Emmanuela Magriplis, Associate Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology & Public Health at the Laboratory of Dietetics and Quality of Life of the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition of the School of Food Sciences and Nutrition of the Agricultural University of Athens, Visiting Professor of the Department of Medicine at the Laboratory of Public Health of the University of Patras.
– Dr. Eleni Papachatzi, Pediatrician of the Pediatric Clinic of the Universital General Hospital of Patras and Postdoctoral Researcher of the Laboratory of Hygiene Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Patras.

Emmanuela Magriplis: Breastfeeding, Child Nutrition and Physical Activity

Breastfeeding, Child Nutrition, Physical Activity… 3 concepts or if you like 3 pillars that support the health & well-being of our children. However, in recent years in Greece, there has been a continuous increase in childhood overweight and obesity, with rates reaching alarming levels already in the early school years. What are we doing wrong?

The only thing that is certain is that all of us, parents and health professionals, want to see them happy and full of vitality. With Professor Mr. Vantarakis from the University of Patras (Medical School) as our guide, and the 6th Health ADM as the coordinator, of the European project Health4EUkids, we focus on increasing skills and not just information through sustainable interventions in all three pillars.

– Many mothers want to breastfeed but are not adequately supported – online preparation and technique materials have been created depending on the mode of birth! Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Greece are disappointing. Less than 1% of mothers breastfeed exclusively.
– There are theoretical dietary & behavioral guidelines. The program creates a different counseling methodology that trains health experts to personalize their suggestions: The Smart Family. The important thing is to add the positives and not simply subtract the negatives!
– Physical activity targeted at existing structures safely.. Waiting for the next episode…….
