First In-Person Training for Community Nurses – Developing Skills to Build Relationships with Families and Focus on Strengths
slv1

As part of Health4EUKids project, the National Institute of Public Health (NIJZ) is working on integrating the Finnish “Smart Family” lifestyle counseling method into Slovenia’s healthcare system. Following a series of online training sessions in the spring of 2024, which introduced the method and its theoretical foundation, the community nurses are now undergoing two in-person trainings to further develop practical skills needed to implement theory into everyday practice.

On 10.9.2024, the first in-person session took place, led by nurse Helena Grmek, who brings valuable expertise from both nursing and psychotherapy. The focus of this training was on building strong, trust-based relationships with families and adopting a strength-based approach in counseling. The day-long session fostered a deep understanding of how trust, empathy, and strengths play a crucial role in lifestyle counseling. These skills will help the nurses make a lasting positive impact on the families they work with, empowering them to make healthier lifestyle choices during this vital developmental stage.

The second in-person training, scheduled for later this autumn, will concentrate on motivational interviewing techniques, further enhancing the nurses’ ability to facilitate meaningful conversations around lifestyle changes.
